What is the Howdens Shaker Oak 4 Panel Door?
This is an internal, unglazed door from the Howdens Shaker range. It has an engineered particleboard core, American white oak veneer and a stile-and-rail construction. The engineered core provides greater dimensional stability than solid timber while the real oak veneer supplies the grain, tone and natural variation customers expect from an oak door.
Its four recessed panels run in a neat vertical arrangement. The design is more streamlined than a traditional raised four-panel door, so it works well with modern kitchens, calm neutral schemes and simple lever handles. Because oak is a natural material, every door varies slightly in grain and shade. When several doors are being fitted together, we can help plan the order and orientation for a balanced result.
An unfinished oak door you can personalise
The standard Shaker Oak 4 Panel Door is supplied unfinished. Every face and edge must be sealed with a compatible varnish, stain or approved product such as Osmo Door Oil, following the latest Howdens instructions. Waxes, polishes and unsuitable oils do not seal the veneer correctly and may risk surface damage or delamination.
Leaving the door unfinished gives you control over its final appearance. A clear finish can preserve the pale tone of American white oak, while a suitable stain can coordinate it with flooring, furniture or existing joinery. Always test the chosen finish on an inconspicuous area because the final tone can differ from a small sample.
Available sizes, trimming and installation
The standard model is 1981mm high and 35mm thick, with several common imperial widths available. Howdens permits limited trimming—up to 4mm from each side, top and bottom—when equal amounts are removed and all instructions are followed. The door is lipped on its long edges, and excessive trimming can compromise the engineered construction.
Professional fitting includes checking the existing lining, measuring the opening, sizing the door within the permitted tolerances, preparing hinge and latch positions, installing the agreed hardware and adjusting the closing gaps. The solid construction means the latch can be positioned on either side, but rail joints must be avoided. Read our door measuring guide before requesting a quotation.
Standard, pre-finished and fire-door options
This page covers the standard unfinished, non-fire-rated Shaker Oak 4 Panel Door. Howdens also manufactures separate pre-finished and FD30 versions. A factory-finished model reduces the initial finishing work, while a certified FD30 door is required where the opening must provide fire resistance. These are distinct products and a standard door cannot be converted into a certified fire door.
If you are unsure which version you need, tell us where each opening is located. We can help compare the practical differences before the doors are ordered and ensure that any fire-door specification uses appropriate certified components.
