What is the Howdens Rockingham Oak 4 Panel Door?
The Rockingham is an internal, unglazed door from Howdens with four raised-style panels arranged in a traditional configuration. It uses an engineered particleboard core covered with American white oak veneer. This construction provides the appearance and natural variation of oak with greater stability than a door made from solid timber throughout.
Solid oak mouldings add definition around the panels, while the substantial rails and stiles give the door a convincing classic appearance. As oak veneer is a natural material, grain direction, tone and figuring vary between doors. That variation is part of the character of a real-wood product and should be considered when ordering several doors for the same hallway or landing.
An unfinished oak door ready for your chosen finish
This Rockingham oak door is supplied unfinished. It must be sealed on every face and edge using a compatible varnish, stain or approved door oil such as Osmo, following the current Howdens care instructions. Ordinary waxes, polishes and unsuitable oils may not seal the veneer correctly and can risk delamination.
An unfinished door gives you useful control over the final colour and sheen. A clear finish can retain the pale natural oak appearance, while a suitable stain can coordinate the door with floors, furniture or existing joinery. Always test the finish on a discreet area because veneer absorbs products differently and the finished shade can vary from a sample.
Sizes, trimming and professional installation
The standard range is 1981mm high and 35mm thick, with common imperial widths available. Howdens permits limited trimming—up to 4mm from each side, top and bottom—provided material is removed evenly and the fitting instructions are followed. Excessive trimming can expose or weaken the engineered construction.
Accurate fitting matters. We inspect the existing frame, confirm the opening, plane the door within its permitted tolerances, prepare hinge and latch positions, fit the selected hardware and align the closing gaps. The solid construction allows the lock to be positioned on either side, but mid-rail joints must be avoided. For measuring guidance, see our internal door measuring guide.
Is the standard Rockingham door fire rated?
No. This product is the standard non-fire-rated Rockingham door. Howdens offers a separate Rockingham FD30 model for openings where a certified fire door is required. A standard door must never be described or modified as an FD30 door. If you are unsure, tell us where the opening is located and we can discuss the appropriate certified door and compatible components.
